Importance of the P57 molecule in Hoodia gordonii
The percentage of the P57, and the suite of similar molecules found in samples of Hoodia through the HPLC tests is generally accepted that it indicates the potency of the product but more importantly it is part of the authentication process in determining Hoodia gordonii content in the raw material or finished product.
The P57 suite of molecules found in pure Hoodia is responsible for the reaction which hoodia has on the brain to initiate the suppression of hunger and thirst. Although it is not necessarily the only active suite of molecules found in Hoodia it is by far the most well documented and defined up to date. The % P57 thus contained in a given sample is generally accepted as a reflection the effectiveness of the product.
